Anybody tried VirtualAcorn of any flavour on Windows 7 at all ? Is it expected to be sufficiently similar to Vista to not be an issue.

My PC currently has XP on it and I'm going to be putting Windows 7 on it, when it's released. I suppose at the very least I may need a new unlock code for VirtualRPC-SA

A number of people have been testing VirtualRPC on Windows 7 since the first beta release. Currently there don't seem to be any problems. A number of annoying issues under Vista seem to have been corrected, for example tests done so far indicate that User Account Control can be left enabled under Windows 7 when using VirtualRPC.

Personally I would wait a few months for Windows 7 to "settle down" before upgrading a working XP install. However when Windows 7 has been installed in the place of XP, the same VirtualAcorn unlock code should work

I've just bought a new PC with Windows 7 installed which has replaced an XP PC.

I've installed VRPC Adjust and when double clicking its icon I get an error message "Acorn RiscPC Emulator with RISC OS Adjust has stopped working". When I click the "View problem details" button, the following information is displayed. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no visible difference:-
Application Timestamp: 411f57d3
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bdadb
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00052b79
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057

Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

Can you throw any light on the matter?

Keith.

Yes. It's the same ntdll.dll problem that happens with some machines on Vista. Take a look at the Vista article in the Windows section of the VirtualAcorn Knowledge Base (follow the support link).

In brief : Put VRPC into Win 98/Me compatability mode. Then unlock it. Boot into desktop. Quit VRPC. Turn off compatability. Sorted.

Having done as suggested above, I double clicked the VRPC program icon and it ran as far as the Unlock screen. I entered the unclock code and clicked on the "unlock" then clicked on the agree to abide by license terms. I clicked on accept when the old error message "Acorn RiscPC Emulator with RISC OS Adjust has stopped working" reappeared.
The following details were disclosed (which differ slightly from the original message):-
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: VirtualRPC-Adjust.exe
Application Version: 1.1.0.0
Application Timestamp: 411f57d3
Fault Module Name: atapicd.dll

My machine is new and was bought with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. As far as I can tell the User Accounts system differs from Vista in as much as one can choose between always notify or never notify when changes are made. I have set it to never notify.
Have you any further suggestions?

Keith.

You'll need to remove the AtapiCD.dll - as this machine doesn't have an ATAPI compatable optical drive:

UAC (it would seem from testing) can be left enabled on a Windows 7 install.

Thanks Aaron, that did the trick. Furthermore with UAC enabled everything seems OK.

My only problem now is how to change the VRPC display resolution to 1920x1080 to match the resolution of the PC, but I'll do my own research first before asking for help.

Thanks again,

Keith.
