On the point of buying in, so that the new laptop can benefit from running Software in its native environment - should I go for the basic version or the bells and whistles one?

There are two versions of VirtualRPC.

The SE version comes with RISC OS 4.02
The Adjust versions comes with RISC OS 4.39

There is no "Select" version as Select is a subscription scheme from RISCOS Ltd.

I can't really advise on which version to purchase as it depends what you want. If you want the latest version of RISC OS, buy the Adjust version, if you are happy with an older version of RISC OS buy the SE version as it's cheaper.
