On booting (Windows 7 laptop) I get the message "not enough stack to call filing system". I cancel and the boot proceeds. The only problem seems to be that !SparkFS will not run.

The most likely cause is some change you've made to the RISC OS !Boot sequence.
Sometimes attempting to execute files that don't exist can cause this problem.
??
Reporter from Martin Avison might help you find the problem:

I can't stress it often enough, if you make changes to the RISC OS !Boot sequence and you aren't careful all sorts of problems can occur. It's next to impossible for someone else to work out what change has caused a specific problem :(
