Hi,

when I had to move VA to a new computer (Samsung notebook with 64 bit Win7) a few months ago, I had to click four times to run VA; IIRC, Aaron asked whether the notebook has a CD drive (it does).
As the program did work, I didn't try anything else to find a cause for my problem.

Now, however, things have changed drastically:
back from my summer holidays, I tried to fire up VA -nothing appeared to happen.

I tried the various compatibility modes - nothing.

I uninstalled VA, deleted the remaining files, re-installed to a different hard disk - nothing.

Now I'm totally clueless about any options left.

Luckily, it's not a matter of "life and death", because I've got a second installation of VA on a little XP netbook, so somehow I guess I'll be able to muddle on, BUT over the next two weeks I'll be taking photos of all 1200 pupils in my school and process them in VA - on a 1024*600 screen that is not a pleasant task.

So... HELP, please!

Regards,

Jochen

Apologies for the delay in replying. One of the 'features' of Windows 7 seems rather hard to justify, put simply not all error messages are displayed on screen so that the user can take appropriate action. If VirtualRPC fails to run then an appropriate error will have been generated, but the user may not see it.

All error messages are stored in the Windows event logs, so it's a case of manually opening the logs and finding out what error VirtualRPC generated.

Go to 'Control Panel', then 'Administrative tools' and double click on 'Event Viewer'.
In the left hand pane double click on 'Windows Logs'
Then double click on 'Application'

In the right hand pane click on 'find'
In the 'Find what:' box type 'VirtualRPC' and press return

Hopefully one of the copies of the error message generated by VirtualRPC will be found. With these details we should be able to diagnose the problem.

Hi,

thanks for the clear instructions.

Here are three randomly selected messages (General and Details):

Unfortunately I started searching and only then thought of trying to run VA - the event logger keeps going back in time; I hope these messages cover events relevant here.
Would the event log search start again at the present time if I werre to re-boot my notebook?

Sorry, but nothing in the above list helps with diagnosing the problem.

Make sure you have a backup of the entire VitualRPC folder, normally:

C:\Program Files\VirtualAcorn\VirtualRPC-AdjustSA

then, once you have the backup, try re-installing VirtualRPC (from the original CD) over the top of the current installation.
If VirtualRPC runs after the re-install then you will need to unlock it again. It should be the same unlock code.
