Despite the configuration options (in !Boot) to truncate filenames only after a configurable length, I find the filer truncates files after about 16 characters regardless of the settings. On my Iyonix this is not the case. Is there anything I can do to fix this on VA?

I have done a little research here but still no solution!

The problem is that the filenames are truncated with an elipsis unless 'full info' is selected, in which case there is no truncation. I have the configuration setting ('CMOS') set to truncate off.

You need to set the 'Maximum displayed filename width' for each of the filer displays (Large icons, Small icons, Full info and Thumbnail).

Double click on !Boot, then click on Filer and then on Name truncation. You will probably find that 'Full Info' is set to 4096 OS Units, so alter the other options to match.

Doesn't help! In fact, I had it set to 1024 before which should have been enough, but changing it to 4096 made no difference. Large icons, Small icons and Thumbnail all get truncated. Only full info is not truncated. In fact, with thumbnails the filename is truncated even if the icon size is set very wide.

I suggest asking RISCOS Ltd as they might know what's causing the problem.

In the end I got a solution to the long filenames issue. It seems that the bug is not in the filer itself but that one of the startup files created by the configure utility generates a command line which is too long. Splitting this over two lines fixes the problem, so I am now using 4.39 with proper long filenames on the filer.

The file is <Choices$Write>.FlrSetup

The original version was:

X Filer_Options -Verbose -Force
X Filer_Truncation -LargeIconDisplay 4096 -SmallIconDisplay 4096
-FullInfoDisplay 4096 -ThumbnailsIconDisplay 4096
X Filer_Layout -SmallIcons -SortByType
X Filer_Thumbnails -Width 384 -Height 256 -Depth 0 -MaximumFileSize 256

The line with Filer_Truncation needed to be split over two lines, as
follows:

X Filer_Truncation -LargeIconDisplay 4096 -SmallIconDisplay 4096
-FullInfoDisplay 4096
X Filer_Truncation -ThumbnailsIconDisplay 4096
