I had this type of error yesterday after months of stable use on the Mac. VRPC put up a screen with my (correct) product code/key fields correctly filled in [Ok the letters used in the unlock key were in lower case whereas my paper records indicated upper, but the same a-z letters] but would not 'take' them {neither when I amended them to Upper case].
I suspect a rather vigorous Onyx session (version 2.2.9 of the utility), clearing our various caches etc. in an excess of garbage clearing zeal.
Anyhow I used my intuition inspired by many years of computer use. A log out and re-start fixed it, no more request for a key.
[I also added the 10.6.8 incremental update from Apple just prior to the prob but I don't think that was the cause.]
