My laptop was accidentally switched off last night rather suddenly when the battery came out accidentally. AFAICT everything is working now except that VRPC somehow lost its configuration, so wouldn't boot up properly (it had defaulted to looking for ADFS). That was easily fixed, and I thought it was working fine again until I tried to fetch my email. PopStar just keeps reporting "Unable to make connection for <server>". I fetch email from two completely different servers, and it does the same for both of them. Usenet and WWW both work fine, and I can ping the mail servers in question from VRPC.

I suspect there might be something else I need to change in the configuration, but can't figure out what it should be.

Sorry for following up to my own post, but I've worked out what's happened (and it wasn't really a VRPC-related problem anyway, as it turned out). I'd forgotten to reset the year, because rather annoyingly the time and date but not the year were preserved, and POPstar didn't seem too keen on doing anything when it thought it was 1901.
