Hi,
If I've got some process such as encoding an audio file using lame.exe in Windows, VRPC grinds to a halt. Is there any way to avoid this?
Thanks,
Adam

Yes, don't try and encode audio files whilst running VRPC.
Seriously the problem is caused becuase the encoder is knicking all the CPU time. You need to increase the Priority of VirtualRPC. To do this:
Quit VRPC
From Windows go to C:\Program Files\VirtualAcorn\VirtualRPC-xxx
Load the VA.cfg (it might just be called VA) file into NotePad
Alter the line that says
ProcessorPriority=0
to say
ProcessorPriority=3
Save the file
Start up VRPC.
If this doesn't help then your PC just can't cope with all the things you are asking it to do.

I've experimented with numbers between 1 and 3 and I can now choose between:
* VRPC frozen, fast encoding
* VRPC running very jerkily, slow encoding
* VRPC running smoothly, paused encoding

...so that's an adequate (if not ideal) solution, thanks.

Hmm, interesting - nothing else on Windows slows down when I'm encoding stuff, but maybe VRPC is more processor-intensive than everything else.
<veering off topic> Would multi-core processors improve things? I don't know how they work, but could VRPC run on one core, WIndows on another, audio encoding on a third and whatever on the fourth?
